My kids spend a lot of time in my classroom during the school year. I am their home away from home. I teach them academics of course, but I also teach them many other skills. I teach them independence, life skills, how to take care of themselves and any other things. I establish a sense of community and family in our classroom. (I have been called mom many times ). I establish that we are indeed a family and that we must keep our house (classroom) clean at all times. With a place to store their backpacks and coats, I think this would make it so much easier. Right now, they sit on the back of their chairs and they are constantly falling off and distracting to all of us. As of today, all.of my kids will be coming back face to face learning with me. We are in a small portable and there is not much room. My students are also diagnosed Autism (all of them). Keeping distractions to a minimum is key to helping them learn as well as minimize meltdowns. A place to store their belongings out of the way and neatly would help not only with their learning outcomes, but their sensory needs as well.
