Sensory regulation is a part of daily life for everybody. For someone like me and you, it might look like tapping my foot, biting my nails, or listening to music while I work. But for my students, sensory regulation can be a challenge and requires special attention from educators. Just like making sure a child with poor vision sits at the front of the class, allowing my students access to items for meeting their sensory needs is allowing my students access to learning and educational materials. When sensory needs are unmet, my students may become overly excited, anxious or upset leading them to exhibit negative behaviors such as crying, hitting, aggression, or inattention. After meeting their sensory needs through lights, movement, sound, touch, etc., my students are calmer, more focused, and engaged in their social and educational environments.
