My 3rd-5th grade students were ecstatic when we began our first ever ukulele unit in their general music class. Students learned ukulele history, proper playing techniques, melodies, and chords. What they were most excited about was the opportunity to play with each other and help teach their peers how to play. When my students came once a week for their 40 minute music class, they were immersed in the discovery of the instrument and how we could introduce ukulele into class projects and musical pieces. We have limited resources, but an unlimited passion of and for musical discovery. With our small set of instruments, larger class sizes were not able to share in the joy of learning ukulele nearly as often or as in-depth as their peers in smaller classes. These 15 ukuleles will complete our class set and ensure every child is able to experience these instruments. This past school year (2018-2019) was the very first year we had an in-school ukulele club for 3rd graders. A limited amount of students were accepted into the club due to our lack of ukuleles. These students got an enrichment session at the end of the day for ukulele, culminating in a concert where they accompanied the 4th and 5th grade choir in "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." It was an amazing opportunity for collaborative learning for the students, and after our first concert the ukulele club begged for more opportunities to perform. With the interest level in the club skyrocketing from both parents and students alike, I would like to be able to provide more students ukuleles to continue what I hope will become a wonderful tradition at this elementary school.
