My project is all about helping students better understand the topics we cover in class through hands-on experiences.
Being able to visualize information (whether virtually or through physical models) helps students to better understand the topics being discussed.
Both the VR headset and the 3D printer I have included as part of this project will help students better understand the subject matter by helping to make it real for them. This was something that was especially challenging to do during the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to online learning that resulted from it. This project will not only help students advance their academic learning by giving them unique opportunities, but will also get them more excited about the subjects we cover by presenting them in engaging ways.
One way this project will help make history real for my students is through virtual reality experiences. Virtual reality experiences allow students to experience historical events as if they were actually there. While reading about a topic in a book can help students learn about a topic, being able to essentially see it for themselves helps students to better understand the topic and to make connections that otherwise they may overlook. A great example of this is with the bombing campaigns in WWII. The British Broadcasting Company has created an excellent VR experience (1943 Berlin Blitz 360˚, A BBC VR & Immersive VR Education Production) that lets students see what it would have been like to ride in a plane during the Berlin Blitz. This experience is built around a primary source in the form of an audio recording from a war correspondent who actually flew in one of the planes as it carried out a mission over Berlin.
