When my students reflect back on their time in 2nd grade, they consistently name the various projects as highlights of their experience. My students are given choice and voice to make a difference in our school, community, and the world. Project work involves creativity and collaboration to see the products through to fruition. One of the challenges with project work is storage of materials and the ability to gather and maneuver materials for the project. The carts will allow us to store common materials like paper, paints, glue, tape, staplers, and craft supplies to be ready to use and move to a location for a small group to work together. Other carts will hold resources for the project such as books, magazines, and models used during research phases of project work. Other carts will hold parts of the project, as they are being constructed. Accessibility, flexibility, and mobility of materials and resources enable students to actively collaborate on their project work. Students can quickly roll a cart of their supplies to the design studio, the collaboration space outside our classroom, or to a corner of the room. Carts keep things organized and saves time by keeping materials together for ongoing work. Students can quickly find their work and get started right away. Students will be able to continue to design and create pollinator homes for bees and bats; design and care for a garden; make games for kindergartners; create an exhibit guide for our local museum; create an invention to solve a problem; create brochures to support the development of a penguin exhibit at our local zoo; promote a collection of funds and supplies for the local Humane Society; and a variety of other projects students may choose to work on.
