With an ESOL population of 120 plus students on our campus, we serve the largest English as a second language population in the Columbus area. I serve approximately half of the 120 students, with a focus on Kinder, first, and second grades. As an ESOL classroom teacher, I meet with each group of my students 5 days a week, for 45 minutes a day. During these sessions, we cover effective reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. There is a particular emphasis on competencies necessary for students to meet standards on the ACCESS for ELLs (a language proficiency exam). I also incorporate math, science, and social studies throughout my weekly lessons. Newcomers need a strong foundation to quickly and confidently flourish in the Engish language. My class size is typically 9-12 students, which allows me to work in small groups, as well as individually with my newcomers. Hands-on activities, letter/sound acquisition, word building, and targeted technology instruction have proven to be very effective for my newcomer students. With the Fire 7 tablets, I will be providing activities that students can independently work on, filled with the skills needed to build a solid base in English. The Fire 7 tablet will allow for read-aloud books, vocabulary instruction, spelling and grammar lessons, conversation practice, listening comprehension, and weekly assessments, all while building upon their confidence in technology. By providing a loving, encouraging, supportive, and technologically rich environment, my ESOL students feel more confident in the aforementioned learning environment. They know when they come to my classroom that they will be welcomed, and encouraged to be their authentic self: an Awesome English Language Learner!
