My students read numerous books, passages and poems throughout the school year. Rarely do they ever see themselves reflected in the literature they read. Rarely can they relate with the characters or settings. As a result, some of my students lose interest and find the literature boring or out of touch. Studies have shown that African American students that read literature where they are reflected in positive uplifting situations can improve reading and writing scores. I plan to use these books in my fifth grade literacy class. I chose this Newbery Honor book because my student population is transient and can relate to the main character. This humorous look at children dealing with adverse situations can give some levity and hope to my students.
