The furniture and supplies I've selected for our students will be placed in a room we have for children to use when they are struggling in the classroom and may need to take a break to calm down. This is a space designated as a safe alternative for any student in crisis. Each piece of furniture was selected for its therapeutic benefits and durability. Upon entering the room students may choose to either sit on the exercise play mat or in one of the inflatable seats available. The Milliard Crash Pad is ideal for a student seeking sensory input in order to help self-regulate, while the Harkla Hug Inflatable Peapod offers a sense of security. Once the student is comfortable, a teacher will help the child complete a self-reflection to address how they are feeling and what caused them to leave class. The materials offered to the student such as the weighted Huggaroo Puppy or Twiddle Sport Sensory Toys will help the student self-soothe while they practice processing their emotions using techniques from our social-emotional curriculum, PATHS. Your donations will help us create a much-needed calming environment with controlled sensory stimuli. Our staff will be able to use the space for a child who needs a quick break with the Fidget Toy Set or as an alternative location to practice social-emotional skills. This smaller, private space with the hand-picked sensory materials is also ideal for special education students needing a quiet break with fewer stimuli. The materials in this room will be essential in helping us reach our goal for students to gain more self-control over their bodies and emotions, thus helping them focus and improve academic achievement.
