Our focus is on creating opportunities that stimulate academic success, personal growth, independent functioning, as well as social skills within the school and community setting. In order for acquisition of these necessary life skills consistent, repeated direct instruction is necessary. Weekly, we work on cooking, cleaning, and laundry skills to ensure that students are well prepared for life. We also teach table manners, budgeting, time management, and communication in weekly lessons. In order for us to teach these vital skills that our students need to become productive members of society and meet their Individualized Education Program goals, we need appliances.  We have taught folding clothes and sorting clothes into piles depending on colors, whites, lights, etc.  but we do not have a working washer or dryer to effectively teach students how to wash clothes. By not being able to teach the skill in its entirety our students develop gaps in their concept development which is negatively impacting.  Some of our students also have fatigue and dexterity issues with their hands and stirring or mixing for any length of time is cumbersome for them.  We are requesting a KitchenAid stand mixer to expand our kitchen appliances.  The end goal is for our students to acquire these skills through very specialized, direct instruction, and many opportunities for practice from specially trained teachers to ensure safety and independence in the generalization of these skills across all settings.   Donating a washer, dryer, and KitchenAid stand mixer will greatly improve the independence of our students. Thank you for your donation!
