When students search for a book to read they are looking for topics they spark their interest and characters they can connect with. Many times our students fail to find characters who look like them. I want to provide my students with the opportunity to see themselves and their cultures in the books they read. Expanding our classroom library with books they represent different cultures, genders, and experiences will help students feel more apart of their classroom environment. When students look through our collection of books they will see characters and subjects they can identify with. This is so important for all students, but especially students at such a young age where they are learning about who they are as people. I want to provide a safe space for children of all races, backgrounds, and cultural experiences and one way to do this is by diversifying our library.
