My students have been learning to set their own goals. Knowing their math facts fluently will set them up to be successful in Algebra and beyond! Our curriculum gets very difficult in third grade and trying to teach them how to do 2 and 3 step word problems become overwhelming if they aren't fluent with basic facts. We will use the materials for practice. We have fluency games on computers. We sing silly math fact songs and practice as much as possible on whiteboards. What we need is a little more motivation to push the memorizing along. I can't wait to have them use their timers to check each other. The award stickers alert parents and start the momentum for success. I'm setting up their goal folders now. When successful they will grow in confidence and learn that math can be fun!
