I was so excited recently to attend a training where I learned of a system to help kindergarten students choose and complete math center activities independently. After instruction and practice with how to access the centers, students are able to choose an activity or task that is at their particular learning level, and is appealing and fun for them! These math activities support the higher level thinking required of the current common core standards, yet are developmentally sound for students who are 5 and 6 years old. Students who are able to choose their math activity (from a range of choices), are engaged in the project and are motivated to complete the task! My centers are created and include sensory bin activities, a light table (where students order and manipulate colored items on top), hands-on activities, and technology to help students master the standards. The need is for a cubby cabinet with colored trays that students can easily access. Every day, students will choose a color-coded tray from the cubby and will complete that task, showing their work on a recording sheet. The students will know how to get the project out, complete it, and put it back away independently!
