Students will read these novels in class to build on their understanding of events in history and integrate the reading and writing standards. They will be used for shared reading, read-aloud, and silent reading. Students will also participate in class discussions, small group discussions, and activities to build on reading skills and strategies.
Students will complete projects that integrate writing skills, such as designing and writing a postcard that reflect events from the time period or designing a brochure to encourage others to make a different choice to improve their lifestyle or participate in events. These projects will also demonstrate the knowledge gained from the novels and social studies content.
Our school has copies of Dear Levi, but they are missing covers, pages from the book, or are torn in many places. This demonstrates these books are well loved by previous students. We do not have Dear Austin, and would benefit from continuing with a book series the students are already interested in. The students would also be able to compare and contrast the characters and the events from both novels.
