I teach an awesome group of first-grade students who would love to be able to have their own space. In my classroom, we sit in the carpet area for every whole group lesson. My students need their own personal space at the carpet to hold their materials in their laps. Being that I teach upwards of 30+ students, they are all very squished in front of the room. Last year, we had to get rid of the small rug we had. It was old, dirty, and just didn't fit all of my students. Some students were sitting off the rug and didn't get their own designated spot. I ended up using duck tape squares as a way to make my own rug spots for the students. My students have a hard time focusing when they are constantly being squished and stepped on at the carpet area, causing their learning to suffer. This summer, they are ripping out all of the carpets in the classrooms, creating an even harder, linoleum surface for my students to sit on. Giving students their own square and space to spread out would largely benefit their learning during whole group instruction. The rug I have selected gives each student a space to call their own. There is enough designated space in the square, they will be able to hold their clipboards and other materials while focusing on the lesson. The rug will also create a soft area for my students to sit while focusing on their learning. My students deserve a new classroom rug to benefit their learning!
