In an effort to combine novel studies with historical references I have chosen to incorporate fiction novels that incorporate real-life events. I recently visited the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. and have since felt an overwhelming desire to educate my students about the Holocaust. The book, Number the Stars, will allow the students to form a personal connection with the events that occurred during this time-frame, and make real-life connections while analyzing the different literary elements. Last year we discussed the Holocaust, and the students were unable to provide any information regarding the events that took place during that time period. I feel it is important for the students to have an understanding of the different events that occurred and helped frame our culture.
