Our classroom is a place where students learn, teach, collaborate, innovate, and create. For students to do this successfully, they need a classroom environment that works for them. They can be motivated to work hard and go deep into the learning process, but if they are distracted by uncomfortable seats or a lack of opportunity for movement, their learning can be negatively affected. Fourth grade students want to have choice and agency in their learning. They can tell you whether they work best at a traditional desk, on the floor, or while moving on a wobble stool. Where they work best may change from day to day or even from morning to afternoon. Students will be allowed to move to a new location if they are distracted. They will be able to use choose a seating option based on the work that they are doing and the needs that they have. This is a great way to teach children how to take ownership of their learning, and I have seen the engagement that it produces.
