These stools and chairs will help create the classroom environment I aspire to have. Flexible seating gives students choice on where to sit that is comfortable for them. Currently my students are sitting in either regular chairs at a desk or on the floor with a clipboard. With this new furniture, students will be able to sit on yoga balls, wobble stools, or padded cushions on the floor. Flexible seating empowers students to learn through student choice and movement. Having students being able to choose where they sit gives them control over their classroom environment. It also gives kids high-order thinking skills. These students are growing up in a fast pace world that is constantly changing. When students are able to make decisions and be flexible it prepares them for the world outside of the classroom. Flexible seating also allows students to be in control of their learning and make choices to solve problems. Flexible seating also helps students stay alert and be focused. Being able to wobble, rock, or stand during independent work time helps increase comfort and engagement. Lastly, flexible seating helps students with the 21st century skill of collaboration. I work at a STEM school and students are constantly having to work as a team to solve problems in science and engineering. Flexible seating makes it easy for students to communicate in small groups, pairs, and whole class. Flexible seating will help me create the environment and student engagement that I strive for.
