When students are uncomfortable, they are distracted and unproductive. Flexible seating allows students to find comfortable positions throughout the classroom. Comfortable students are calm, focused, and productive. When students feel they have some control over their environment, they are often more engaged and perform better academically. We already know students need to move around and shake off their excess energy if they are going to focus on classwork for any length of time. Asking a 5th grade student to sit rigidly at a desk all day does not allow him or her the physical activity needed to keep blood and oxygen flowing, functions vital for attention and learning retention. During a lesson students can wobble, bounce or stretch their legs easier with flexible seating and it won’t cause a huge distraction for the class. It will help the students be their best self.
