The students who walk into my classroom have never known life without technology! These digital natives may know how to use digital tools for entertainment, but my goal as an educator in the 21st century is to teach them the powerful tool that technology can be when used to create and communicate. Education is at a monumental crossroad: ignore technology or embrace it. Embracing technology gives students the best chance to compete in a world where technology is the norm. iPads are an easy way to teach students skills that will lend to their future careers, some of which may not even exist yet! One way I will use these iPads is to teach my students how to record and edit videos to share their knowledge with others. Not only is this engaging, but it is also relevant for today's youth and fits with the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Not only are iPads great tools for creating videos, but they also allow me, as an educator, to offer personalized instruction to students who need targeted practice in certain areas. The ability to differentiate in this way can directly affect achievement in academic areas.
