This past year, I had a handful of students that struggled to sit in a chair. For one reason or another, it was a struggle for them and distracting to other students around them. It was hard for me to give a lesson when students were leaning back on chairs constantly, sometimes they would fall over. It was a constant battle. Often times I thought it would be easier if they had an alternative seating option. I looked into the research and different classroom setups. I read different teachers' experiences and I was sold. Flexible seating was the answer I was looking for. With flexible seating, students are able to take ownership in their own learning. Students are able to choose to stand, they are able to choose to sit on an alternative seat (an exercise ball, a floor cushion...etc), they are able to sit on the floor. With them making the choice of what learning environment is best for them, I hope to take away the distractions and help them choose what works best for them.
