Since we have the opportunity to loop with our students for third and fourth grade, we have noticed a need in our classroom for flexible seating options. Our inclusion classroom, is comprised of general education students and students with various disabilities. Students in the class struggled to remain engaged with traditional seating. To address this need and improve the learning for all students, we would like to add flexible seating to the classroom and to give students choices. Our student centered lessons will begin with whole class instruction and the students will then have the opportunity to choose a location in the classroom to work that best fits their learning styles and movement needs. This ability to choose a workstation increases their motivation, engagement and time on-task. The items we have chosen will provide additional seating options for the students to choose from, strengthen abdominal muscles and improve posture while giving students the ability to move while working. The addition of flexible seating in our classroom will enrich the learning experience for all students. Some of the students have decreased muscle tone or a constant need for movement-based sensory input that contributes to fidgeting, slouching or soreness, making it tough for them to engage in learning. Active seating and movement in the classroom promotes better circulation, improved attention, concentration and energy burning.
