My students are high energy achievers who want to improve their critical thinking and public speaking skills by participating in public policy debate competitions. Starting with 6 students last year, the debate team has grown to 85 this year. Through their hard work they were last year's Junior Varsity city champions! And already this year they have won 5th and 6th place in their first ever Varsity level competition versus well resourced suburban school districts! We are members of an urban school in Massachusetts and 39% of our students are Black, 52% are Hispanic and 78% qualify for free/reduced lunches. Due to budget cuts the students don't have access to the school's single (frequently broken) copier to print out the packets of information they need to analyze in order to prepare for their debate competitions.
