I will be returning to the classroom to teach literacy and life skills to middle school students with autism and intellectual impairments! All students are multiple years below grade level and take the MCAS Alternative portfolio assessment. Many of these students have resistance to reading and require a great deal of sensory support. These materials will help me to meet my students' individual IEP goals, differentiate and individualize instruction, and provide fun, sensory access points to get students excited about learning. Items like the Differentiated Learning Centers will allow me to create small groups within the classroom and work on individualized lessons without needing to be in 10 places at the same time. Leveled text sets will be used to help create guided reading groups with engaging and accessible texts for learners! The manipulatives, such as the whiteboard puzzle pieces, letter cubes, flash cards, and magnetic letters will provide students with a multi sensory access to their learning and assist in teaching foundational reading and phonics skills. My students also have sensory input needs where they need the chewie necklaces, wiggle seats, sensory bands and toys to help them focus and regulate in class. In my literacy class, there is also a need for life skills and social-emotional instruction integration; items like the feelings cards and conversation dice will help allow students to develop these skills.
