In addition to the social skills curriculums we use at school, having a library of age-appropriate texts that explore basic behavior and socials skills would greatly impact the way in which my students learn about, and develop critical behaviors and skills. This library would help my students learn to self-manage and handle their emotions, as well as solve conflicts, show respect and build relationships. The books I have chosen are 50 titles ranging from topics such as using nice words, appropriate bathroom behaviors, and respecting personal space. There are even titles that explore appropriate behavior with a substitute, as well as what to expect during a fire or tornado drill. These new texts would provide an engaging structure to my daily behavior groups that would compliment the current curriculums in place. The diversity in the library would allow me to select 1-2 books to read-aloud a week, giving us time to explore the new behaviors as a group. The students would then have access to them in our classroom library, allowing them to engage with these new skills on their own. A developed social skills and behavior library would provide us with shared vocabulary and concepts that could be referenced as my students continue to practice these appropriate behaviors. As young learners with disabilities, my students need meaningful social skills instruction that is age-appropriate and engaging. My students love being read to, and I know that these texts will help them access and engage with the behaviors that they struggle with.
