Many students have approached me recently and asked me about STEM opportunities at our school. Naturally, I am asked about this topic because of my role as the computer science teacher at our middle school. Having been to trainings and conferences, I know just where my students can go with advancements in STEM learning. With complete confidence, I can see students entering into my STEM classes and clubs performing in competitions and being admitted into colleges that will take their STEM insight to a whole new level. I, also, understand that it is my role to provide these opportunities as much as possible to as many students as possible, especially considering the economic and social disadvantage that many of my students have. LEGO MINDSTORMS expose students to every aspect of STEM by having them apply their scientific mindsets into physically-and-technologically-engineered structures; they will have endless opportunities to connect their experiences to real-world applications at a younger age and in a school district that is focused on increasing STEM opportunities. All students will be encouraged to participate in our robotics club, so as to support student interest in building individual STEM mindsets early on. Our robotics club will meet regularly on a weekly basis and will include opportunities for students to receive instruction on how to utilize modern technology, program in Python (a common and very modern programming language), and conquer challenges that increase as the student moves on. The goal for this robotics club is to raise a team of strong-minded computer scientists that will have the confidence in STEM knowledge to improve their way of thinking with skills to problem solve and reflect, improve our technological world through advancements, and demonstrate their understanding (through UIL Robotics competitions).
