During the 2018-19 school year, I began to create a Makerspace/STEM lab in our K-5 elementary school. My goal is to create a learning environment of growth mindset and developing student skills in the 4 Cs; Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Communication and Creativity. Breakout Box activities supports these goals. I have one Breakout Box that I've used with small groups. Every student who participated in those Breakout activities was totally engaged and begged to do more Breakouts! I want to provide the Breakout hands-on, teamwork problem solving experience more frequently for larger groups of students. Breakout activities lend themselves to differentiated learning experiences while students work as a team. Some of my students who struggle to be successful in the classroom shine as leaders in a Breakout activity. Students who often feel defeated in the classroom persevered and felt proud of what they figured out because the Breakout challenges scaffold for early success in the game. Through Breakout activities, students make valuable connections in their learning and with each other.
