In addition to providing students with strategies through the Second Step and Zones of Regulation curriculum, I dedicate a corner of our classroom to create this calming area and provide students with the tools they need. These can include sensory bottles, stuffed animals, fidget toys, stress balls, along with other multi-sensory tools. This allows students to have a safe, durable and easy to clean area where they can practice their self-regulating strategies. As the students practice these strategies, they can begin to have more appropriate responses to their emotions and environment around them. This will create a more positive learning environment for all students!
