In my class, I have a behavior chart where every student starts the day with 4 stickers. Students could potentially lose their stickers or be rewarded for ending the day with all their stickers. They can only take off stickers if I ask them to. Every day I assign a student to be my chart helper, and whenever I am not in the room or need the chart helper, they are to stand at the front of the room and be the leader of the class, watching for any students that might need to take off stickers. It would be beneficial for the daily chart helper to have a specific place, or chair, to be at so other students can clearly see who the leader is that day. In doing this, students learn to take responsibility for their own behavior and learn how to govern themselves if or when needed. They learn to respect others and their leadership positions. My 1st-grade students need an environment where they can learn and grow. A good portion of my teaching is done at a space other than students' desks so they have opportunities throughout the day to get out of their seats, move, and learn in a new environment. A class rug provides this type of area that can be developmentally appropriate in learning as well as a new space for students to learn.
