Next school year will be my first year teaching general education as I have previously been a push-in special education teacher. I will be teaching kindergarten which in my personal and professional opinion, is the most crucial year in a child's education - you're building the foundation for reading. Here, access to text is crucial. On average where I work, students are reading 2 years below grade level. As I dove deeper into this issue, I observed that students in kindergarten were simply learning the letters and letter sounds, with no guided reading intervention. This is not due to a teacher's lack of knowledge regarding early literacy, but because he/she simply did not have a leveled literacy system. My goal as I take on my new role is to provide incoming kindergarten students the education they deserve. These children are so eager to learn and have all the ability to do so. In order to turn this into reality, I need your support in obtaining a guided reading library. I truly believe that this resource will propel my students forward.
