Flexible seating in the classroom allows students the freedom to choose the best seating arrangement for their learning style. I call this their "Smart Seat"! We talk about how a smart seat is a place to work and we won't be tempted to talk to our buddy, or that it might be a fun seat but we have to follow the rules for that seat or we will lose that choice, ie. wobble stools, Take Anywhere Chairs, etc. We talk about quiet areas, and the rug can be used to lay on our tummies to do work. This also allows them to increase the fine motor muscles in their wrist and hands. When students can choose their smart seat, they have ownership of this choice. This helps reduce the number of behavior problems that can arise in the classroom. By offering alternative seating, students seem to be more engaged in learning to their highest potential. Student engagement equals success! So by offering more choices, kids can choose the take anywhere seats to one of the floor tables and be comfortable with some back support while doing their work. They can also choose a wobble stool if they feel they are a bit wiggly while sitting in a regular chair and need some movement while working. Some stand, sit on a cushion, lay on the floor, etc. By offering so many choices for seating, it can empower these kiddos to make better choices and become more successful.
