These materials will make a difference by putting their hands on books that feature characters of color who are not written as an afterthought. Many of the textbooks or novels we are asked to use in class only give a voice to one perspective. After the end of year feedback, students begged for "books with characters that look like me" and I am doing my best to fulfill their wishes. Participating in literature circles, where they have several high-interest books to choose from, increases their life experience, and lets them have those highly-analytical conversations with their peers.
