My students would benefit greatly from a large classroom rug for group lessons and learning stations. Currently our daily class activities are held on an old, black, frayed carpet remnant. A new rug would brighten the atmosphere in our room. A rug creates a meeting spot where our first grade family feels comfortable and connected. We begin each day with our morning meeting. During this time students greet one another with a greeting of their choice- a fist bump, high five or hand shake. This helps students to settle in and begin the day on a positive note. Next, we have a short time of sharing the important events in our lives. Often it's happy experiences like a visit from the tooth fairy. Sometimes they share a problem or concern. This sharing time encourages students to connect and build relationships. Following our morning meeting, there is a mini lesson that sometimes includes a short video or group game. During the mini lesson students have a time to share their new learning with a shoulder partner. The rug will also provide a designated place for our favorite time of the day, the shared read alouds. A colorful rug will be a bright and welcoming place for my students during learning stations. Students have an opportunity to move to the floor and work with manipulatives and games that enhance their learning experience. Active students need seating choices and the rug provides time away from their desk. They are more engaged and motivated when they are comfortable. A new rug will have a positive impact on the learning and atmosphere in our room.
