This year I am teaching math for the entire 5th grade at our school. Mastery of mathematical concepts has historically been a challenging task for our student population. I hope to make math something they become masters of this coming year! In order to do that, I am incorporating number talks into my instruction. Learning to communicate mathematical thinking is a huge part of success in 5th grade math. Number talks allow students to learn how to verbally communicate their mathematical thinking and brainstorm various solution strategies with their peers. I hope using the Q Ball and speaker will encourage students to participate in these talks, as well as hear what their friends are saying about math!
