These two class sets of Tommy Orange's debut novel, There There, will help keep my students' classroom experience current and engaging. The book encompasses a variety of topics—from the conflict between one's cultural identity and personal identity to the trouble with gun violence in America—that my students will find both interesting and relatable. Students will use the text to deepen their close reading and literary analysis skills. The culminating assessment for this unit will hone students' argumentative essay writing skills. Above all, the text will help instill a love for reading in my students, while simultaneously helping them become more empathetic and understanding citizens.
