I plan to use this book as a read aloud when I teach close reading strategies. I wanted to make sure that I use a high interest novel. Students will focus on the archetypal journey and close reading of the many mythical allusions. Students will learn multiple strategies for acquiring and using academic vocabulary. We will have discussions on the hero's journey as well as the author style which will help prepare us for narrative writing. We will also learn how to create routines and procedures to work in small groups on mini projects exploring the different themes within the novel. Some students already have some knowledge about the story line because of the movie but it will be interesting for them to elaborate on their thoughts and explore different perspectives.
