Representation Matters! We are planning to build culturally relevant independent reading libraries for every grade in our K-8 school. Our students want to read. Our readers want to be empowered to choose their own books that meet their needs and interests. Boston Public Schools does not support Students of Color develop positive self-consciousness by providing culturally relevant resources. The books in our school are out of date and out of touch with our students. We recently finished a project collecting data on our classroom libraries. We found that 60% of the books in our room were published before the year 200 and only 40% of the books were about Characters of Color. We need better books; the students of Boston deserve books that can inform them about their multitudinous pasts and their potential futures.
