I am moving into a new classroom that does not have any of the materials I am requesting. These STEM based materials will be used in my classroom to promote thinking, learning, peer interaction, thoughtful discussions, and fun each and every day. Students are excited to come into a classroom where they get to create and use their imagination. Last school year I witnessed firsthand the benefit and joy that comes from having daily soft openings to my students' school days where they get to awaken their brains using purposeful STEM materials to "play" with. It creates a nonthreatening learning environment where they get truly enjoy their start to the school day no matter what kind of learner they are. Students will use these materials not only in the mornings as they arrive to the classroom, but also during days we have to have indoor recess. These materials lend themselves to many science, math, and even social studies lessons. To name a couple of lessons I will ask my students to create a replicated ancient structure, use LEGOS for fractions, and Keva Planks to create the parts of a plant throughout the school year.
