Research indicates that students need to read a lot of books, with strong comprehension, in order to grow as a reader. Classroom libraries are teacher funded, and are often limited by the teacher's own budget for texts, despite the deep need for students to have a wide variety of texts to read independently. Students need to read volumes with intensity and ferocity. Series books provide this love and passion for reading for even the most reluctant reader. Often times students struggle to see themselves as readers until they launch into their first big series read. By providing students with a classroom library rich in connected texts across a variety of genres, students will be supported in attainment of higher-order literacy skills. I want to support my students' overall achievement in life and research has found that the best predictor of achievement is growth as a reader.
