Reading is celebrated as a way of life in my 7th grade English Language Arts classroom, and it is embedded in everything we do. Since most of my students rely on me for books, the classroom library is our most valuable resource. Students read independently every single day, and reading is also their nightly homework. Since our school does not have a library, and my town's library does not keep regular hours, I would not be able to hold such high standards for my students' reading lives if I did not have a fantastic classroom library. My students do not all come from literacy rich homes, and half of them come to 7th grade reading below grade level. It is a challenge for me to get students to continue their reading lives after they leave the school building. It is also a challenge to find enough high interest books for my students reading two or more grade levels below. Middle schoolers in my community are struggling with issues such as living in poverty, gender identity, growing up in foster care, the increasing opioid epidemic, body image, and and managing their online communities. My students crave ways to deal with these issues, so seeing their lives in the pages of a book helps them socially and emotionally, as well as academically. These current, engaging books are the gateway to meaningful discourse in the classroom and beyond. I am fortunate that my school district has always supported the upkeep of classroom libraries. However, the change in New Jersey's funding formula for public schools has devastated my district. There is no longer money to buy the one resource that will most benefit my students. These books will keep reading engagement high, and show my students that their lives matter!
