When Scholastic News makes an appearance, the children erupt with cheers as they love to participate in the topic at hand. Recently, students were reading and exploring sharks and they were so engaged as they worked with partners to create their own book about sharks. They used the Scholastic Magazine, shark books and the internet to guide them in their research. The students were engaged for a solid 2 hours as they worked together to create an informational text their peers could learn from. They were extremely invested and provided each other with a variety of information to increase their knowledge about sharks. Who knew sharks loved to eat Stingrays? As students explore the magazine, they are immersed in various types of topics including sea animals, history and most importantly, how to make the world a better place. Through the process of reading with partners, hands on activities and research, they are learning important skills they will take forward into higher grades. Please help these firsties get access to all the information they crave.
