Many of us grew up with the "Sit and Get" model of learning. The teacher did most of the talking and we listened. The world is changing and so should we. The time has come for us to make the necessary adjustments to give students our best selves. Education and teaching is more than just a paycheck; but an opportunity to elevate and separate! We must separate ourselves from being mediocre teachers and elevate our students to full capacity. By creating a positive atmosphere with diverse seating, students can feel comfortable with flexibility in the learning environment. I chose the ball chairs as an incentive item so students can work in small groups. They can sit comfortably and once assignments are completed, they may have the option to flip the chairs over and bounce on them. Bean bag chairs will be used for the reading center. Students often shy away from reading but if they can comfortably relax while reading, they will be more compelled to read without back and/ or neck pain. Students also tend to be more engaged with their learning with less disruptions when they are able to choose where they want to sit or the type of seat. Paper and pencil, though still effective, are old school. By using dry erase markers and clipboards, students can work through math problems without the fear of making mistakes that will be hard to erase. They also will not have to worry about tearing their paper if they erase too hard. Students will also be assigned their own mailbox. This will serve as a privacy filter so students can retrieve graded assignments, letters to parents, and other important information without others having full access to it. Creating a positive classroom aura is just as important as content knowledge.
