For decades, the standard format for learning has been to present new information, try to learn it, and then answer questions on a test. How helpful is that format in an increasingly changing and challenging world? Today, our students need to be flexible in their learning and creative in their problem solving. Breakout boxes require students to problem solve, collaborate, think creatively, look for patterns, guess and test. These boxes challenge students to think differently, face challenges and move past frustration. These boxes can be used to introduce new units or as a review at the end of a unit. They are excellent for team building and improving a growth mindset. Simply put, breakout boxes normally consist of 1 large and 1 small box, locked with multiple locks. Students are presented with a story or problem and the final answer is inside the big box which is locked with around 6 locks. The students are given clues to unlock the boxes. The locks are 3, 4, or 5 digit padlocks, 5 letter words locks, directional locks, and keyed locks. To find the codes or keys, the students are faced with a variety of challenges that could include finding patterns, employing math skills, using context clues, following a series of directions and more. They also use black light, QV codes, USB sticks, and URLs to gather more information to solve the codes. I am asking for the materials to build 2 sets of breakout boxes for my class. The experience is more impactful with smaller groups. Thank you.
