As a first year teacher, something that I am planning to emphasize in my classroom each day is a morning meeting. Morning meeting is where the whole class meets on the carpet to start the day together. These can be times where students can bring up concerns that they have or just have a nice laugh together! Having a nice, cozy rug will create the type of space where students are comfortable - not only physically but emotionally. Having a common meeting place for the class is essential to creating a positive learning environment. Students will know that when we are at the rug for a meeting, everyone's voices and ideas are appreciated and accepted. Having this rug will also provide a spot for lots of learning. Throughout the day, students will need a break from sitting in the normal classroom seats. Moving the class to the carpet for mini lessons, read alouds, or even partner work will provide a means of differentiation when the normalcy of table work becomes too much.
