Flexible seating will give my children the autonomy to determine where their brain works best. Currently we have a few options that students use for flexible seating: our large carpet, a small carpet, two lapboards, two butterfly chairs and our back table. This past year, we started small with flexible seating, only allowing students to choose their seats during testing. We experienced so much success with this that I pushed to get approval for students to sit in their special spots during state testing. Since I am looping to 5th grade with my class, we are ready to take flexible seating to the next level. These different seating options were chosen by my students and I. This was a family decision, we discussed each item and even eliminated options that we felt wouldn't best suit us. We discussed the importance of the sensory feedback some options would give to our brains to allow us to better focus. We also discussed the need for and the importance of a cool down area. The pop up tent will be designated as our cool down area, a space where students can go when they are feeling overwhelmed and need to take a minute to center themselves. This cool down area will serve to protect a student's emotional state and promote positive mental health. We are certain that these seating options will allow us to better focus on our academics and our mental health. We acknowledge that the former is just as important as the latter. My students are I are excited to take this next 'flexible seating' step together. We appreciate anything you can contribute! Remember, kindness counts.
