Naugatuck biology teachers are tasking student scientists to work as ecological research team and design a study that assesses one aspect of the protected oak-maple forest ecosystem behind the school. The goal is the assess the health of the ecosystem and encourage sustainable use. Examples of such projects may include google map tour, geocaching, biodiversity evaluation, soil composition and health study, tree density and/or forest inventory, erosion analyses, invasive species, mark and recapture studies, core sampling, succession study and a nature guide to species on the trail. GPS receivers will allow for precise locations to be mapped as phones are not accurate under the canopy.
