By deciding to fund this project, you will provide portable lap desks, wiggle seats, stability balls, and fidget bands to support my current 4 classes of English Language Learners as well as many others in the years to come. These items provide flexible seating options for students during focused instruction, collaborative work, writing and reading small group instruction, independent work, and individualized instruction. Research shows a direct correlation between subtle movement and increased student engagement and focus. Flexible seating accommodates students' learning styles while allowing them to maintain the movement they need to focus, without disrupting the class and others. They can wobble, rock, bounce, or lean. This movement increases the flow of oxygen to their brain. It also increases blood flow and helps to develop their core strength. Students can change their position and location easily without having to lift or move heavy desks and chairs. Flexible seating also allows students to feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their classroom environment. Students can choose where they want to work in the classroom and with whom. Flexible seating encourages students to find their best spot to stay calm, focused, and productive.
