In a typical mathematics lesson, teachers relay the information to students and students are expected to absorb the information and simply accept it as fact. Imagine, instead, a mathematics class where students are the focus and they are allowed to discover mathematics for themselves. This is my goal: having a mathematics classroom focused on students needs while learning about and using a variety of mathematical tools, such as graphing calculators. I believe that calculators could enhance the student experience when used appropriately. These calculators will not be used every time a calculation is necessary, but rather as a way to enhance students engagement. An additional, long-term goal we strive for is stronger scores on state testing. My theory is by exposing students to calculators at younger ages, students could perform better on high-stakes tests such as the SAT or ACT by ensuring they understand the tool and that it is not a source of extraneous stress.
