PreK is full day this year and I would like to add more purposeful play centers. Purposeful play means students look like there are just playing but they are also learning at the same time. These are centers where students love to explore and cannot wait until its their turn to play. Most of my students are from low income families that are unable to provide opportunities to play and learn and some students love to come to school because we have such a variety of "toys" in class. My students desire to play provides me an opportunity to deliver math and literacy concepts in a way that encourages them to focus and retain knowledge. The light table provides a great way for students to play while learning. Using manipulatives to teach concepts is always a winner with my students. Plus, they think they are just playing with toys. The flexible seating is for our class library. I have incorporated coloring at the library as a way for students to retell the stories they are reading, but students are sitting on the floor. The flexible seating will give them a solid surface for developing their early literacy skills though coloring, another form of purposeful play.
