Throughout my teacher preparation program, I learned about the importance of having books that serve as both windows and mirrors. Windows being a look into the lives of people who are different and mirrors being a reflection of our own lives. Students need these types of books to learn about what other people experience and to see themselves represented in the literature in their classroom. I will use these books to teach about social justice and diversity. I believe that culturally responsive teaching and equity are two of the most important things in running a classroom. Diversity permeates and affects every part of a classroom and learning environment. Through these books, I hope students feel less alone and are able to understand diverse life experiences. I want my students to grow a deep understanding of the world around them and I truly believe using literature is a fantastic way to do this.
