For the last two years I have taught in 6th-grade math and science classroom, and this year I will be transitioning to teaching in an 8th-grade reading classroom. While I am beyond excited to teach reading, my classroom library is unfortunately not equipped for the change. The few books that do have are worn out and only at a 6th-grade reading level. With this project, I am hoping to update my library with a wide range of books that capture the interest of my students and are at an 8th-grade reading level. At my school, my students come from many different backgrounds and cultures and in our classroom, we pride ourselves in celebrating our diverse student body. As part of this project, my goal is to fill my library with more books that have minorities as main characters and to deepen the diversity representation in my classroom. Additionally, by adding books like "Americanized, Rebel Without a Green Card", "The Hate U Give", "I'm Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter", and "Odd One Out" to our classroom library, I am hoping it will lead to more class discussions around social justice issues and ultimately more inclusion and equity in our community.
